Extra chairs
were needed in the Sagicor Auditorium in Kingston to accommodate the 326
members and visitors who attended Pentecost services. There were also
6 persons present in the western congregation in Maroon Town.
The day's celebrations included especially powerful and vibrant congregational
singing, including the hymns. Special items of music, which focused on
themes relevant to Pentecost, were presented by soloists as well as vocal
ensembles.
Pastor Ian Boyne and elder George Ramocan delivered the Pentecost messages
in the main service and afternoon bible study session, respectively.
Pastor Boyne gave a dynamic sermon about God's boundless love for his
church. Using the story of the prophet Hosea, whom God commanded to marry
Gomer, a prostitute, he showed how God's love was unrelenting, despite
Israel's constant unfaithfulness. Gomer bore three children, of whom Hosea
was most likely not the father and then left him. But Hosea brought her
back publicly and stayed with her. Pastor Boyne showed how the prophet's
personal life and ministry dramatizes his message. Hosea's life was also
an embodiment of God's redeeming love. He urged listeners to live the
Pentecost message rather than just keeping the ritual. It was a time to
forgive, reconcile, and love again. One member later shared that the message
helped to change her whole thinking about a difficult period she was going
though in marriage.
Elder Ramocan's study in the abbreviated second service explored the Parable
of the Mustard Seed, recorded in Matthew 13:31. In contrast to the general
use of leaven to represent sin in the scriptures, he explained that this
passage uses leaven to represent the church in this age. Using several
supporting references, he proved that God's church was not predicted to
be large, but to be small. Pentecost, he said, is a feast representing
God's work of calling out a first fruit, which is small compared to a
later, much larger harvest. It is Satan's kingdom that is increasing now,
but God's kingdom will ultimately prevail; like the fully grown mustard
seed, it will become dominant out of all proportions to its small beginnings.
Both elders' Pentecost messages built upon the foundation of their Sabbath
message the day before. In his Sabbath sermon, Pastor Boyne emphasized
the importance of missions. He demonstrated how Jesus, Paul, and other
giants in the faith didn't allow anything to distract, discourage or deter
them from their call to missions. Jesus didn't leave the church or stopped
preaching the gospel because the Jewish religious leaders were corrupt
and hypocritical. Paul said he endured everything for the sake of the
elect (2 Timothy 2.10). We can do no less, he said. We must fight against
bitterness, resentment, and sin, or we will allow Satan to send us strong
delusions so we believe lies and risk our faith. Remaining faithful and
focusing on the mission of reaching the world with the gospel were to
be our focus always.
Elder Ramocan's Sabbath bible study was entitled The Identifying Marks
of the True Church. He exploded the five myths about the true church:
1. Large following is evidence of the true church
2. Miracles is evidence of the true church
3. Christians are in every church
4. Anyone can decide on his own to join the true church
5. Once you are worshipping Christ then you are in the true church
He then showed explained what the bible taught was the true gospel that
must be taught by the true church. It was the gospel of the kingdom of
God, he said. One couple who had been experiencing enormous psychological
pressure from their former church, and who were considering visiting again,
said Elder Ramocan's sermon was conclusive for them; they should stay
faithful to their call, no matter what. GS.
